Description

Our reusable pads are a healthy and environmentally friendly menstrual health solution.

Made at the ‘Her Shakti’ community centre in Jagatpura, Jaipur, all money made by Sanitree is reinvested into our goals of female empowerment, menstrual education and environmental sustainability.

The pad is made from:
One layer of stain camouflaging black organic cotton
Five layers of thin, ultra-absorbent brushed organic cotton
One layer of waterproof and biodegradable polyurethane laminate (PUL)
Lead-free, stainless steel poppers so that the pad can be securely folded for easy, mess-free transportation.

We strive for sustainability in everything we do. Each pad comes in a pouch made using offcuts from the textile industry. This means that every pouch is beautiful, unique and, most importantly, that the packaging is completely plastic-free. Each pad also comes with instructions on how to use and care for it (although it’s pretty simple just remember to rinse it, wash it, and dry it!)

Sanitree is a social enterprise based in Edinburgh and Jaipur working to tackle period poverty and the stigma surrounding menstruation. We train women from vulnerable backgrounds to sew and sell reusable menstrual pads at the Her Shakti Centre, a workshop and community centre in Jaipur.

Our Mission
To end period poverty and the stigma surrounding menstruation in a sustainable, collaborative and ethical way.

Our Vision
Our vision is that menstruation becomes an experience that is empowering for people and kind to the planet.
By purchasing Sanitree pads you are helping to support our wider outreach work.

The Her Shakti Centre is where our cloth pads are made; it doubles as a workspace and community centre for our beneficiaries and the wider community.

The women we employ come from various vulnerable backgrounds, many of them widows, single mothers and domestic abuse survivors who are able to support their family through this part-time flexible employment.

We give our beneficiaries a space to share skills and support each other. We also offer skills-based training and personal development activities to engage the wider community such as self-defence classes and garment-making workshops.

The women we employ not only gain a source of income but also have the chance to learn new skills. By using the ‘train the trainer’ model we set out to build the confidence of our beneficiaries and increase their employability and independence. Putting beneficiaries in leadership positions also ensures our long term sustainability.

Sanitree has been at the forefront of tackling period poverty both in the UK and in Jaipur. We were co-organisers of the rally in support of the Bill to provide universal access to free period products in Scotland. During the Covid-19 pandemic, we crowdfunded to provide foodbank users in Edinburgh with 140 of our reusable pads and partnered with an NGO to distribute over 250 pads in Jaipur.
